Local Elections 2007

A supporter of the Green Party was handing out flyers outside the union today (not very environmentally friendly, as rather than recycle them, everyone just put them in the nearest bin). "We came second last year, we've got a really good chance of winning this year", he said. Highly amused by this statement, the only reply I could think of was "No you haven't!"

Sheffield council is currently led by the Labour Party, who hold 44 seats to the Liberal Democrats' 34. The Conservatives and the Green Party are out of the race with 2 each. In Broomhill ward, the story is slightly different. Being a very wealthy district, the Labour party has virtually no footing, and Lib Dems have a strong hold (although in fairness, the tree-huggers Greens are also well-supported).

Above are the votes from last year's election. It's worth remembering that the Broomhill ward is also represented by two further councillors, voted for in previous elections. Both are Liberal Democrat, and with turnout at just 25% last year, it's a pretty safe seat. The chance to strip Labour of their leadership of the council is one that voters in other wards have to take.

Back in Dartford, the Conservatives have the leadership of the council at the moment, in a coalition with the Residents' Association and the New England Party. The result of this year's council vote has been identified by many as an preview of the next General Election result: the pro-active Conservatives (who have built Princes Park stadium, Dartford Dojo, the skate park, secured the Tour de France route through the town, and invested heavily in regeneration) have made the Labour party look rather pathetic. The Conservatives will be hoping that their excellent track-record in the borough, coupled with the Blair/Brown effect will see the end of the phrase "Labour MP for Dartford" when the next election is called. I for one hope it will be sooner, rather than later: in fact, it should be called as soon as Gordon Brown takes over the premiership.

The polls open tomorrow.
